The Power of Music in Sudan: a documentary

A still from the doccie

The Music In Africa Connects Projects released the documentary, The Power of Music in Sudan; a film that explores the lives of musicians in conflict ridden countries.

The film, shot a few months before the recent national uprising which dethroned former leader Omar al-Bashir, was shot by the Yalla! Khartoum, a Sudanese arts project developed by the Goethe-Institute of Sudan.

According to the Music In Africa website:

"[t]he film traces the implementation of this initiative, which brought together musicians from different backgrounds to share workshop ideas, co-create, record new songs and perform on stage in a context where artists, especially women, face challenges such as censorship and repression."

It explores the narratives of Sudanese artists Tarig Omar and Musab Mohamed, the Kenyan musician and activist Ambasa Mandela and the American-German musician Juju Rodgers.
